UK Record Industry Goes After Russian Pirates
Russia-based music sharing website AllofMP3.com is set to be slapped by the British recording industry for making pirated music available to UK consumers.
Britain's version of the RIAA, the BPI, had to seek approval of the suit from the High Court in order to pursue the case against the Russian company.
At issue was whether the case could be take internationally. The High Court ruled it could be since the file-sharing service was available to customers within the UK.
"We have maintained all along that this site is illegal and that the operator of the site is breaking UK law by making sound recordings available to UK based customers without the permission of the copyright owners," said a BPI attorney.
The recording industry alleges the website is able to offer cheap music downloads because it has not been paying royalties to the artist nor the record companies.
