Tower Records Digitizes
Apple's wildly popular iTunes service just got a little more competition. Music industry veteran Tower Records launched 'Tower Records Digital,' a web-based music download store offering 99 cent songs at higher than usual quality.
The new service is powered by Puretracks, which will help Tower deliver 192 kbps tracks. Most others deliver only 128 kbps, says the company.
"Having the highest quality sound is as important to us as it is to our customers. Sound quality is one of the primary reasons we chose to partner with Puretracks," said Jason Munyon, VP of Business Development at Tower.
The downloads are in Windows Media Audio format and can be downloaded to the user's computer, burned to disc or to portable digital media and music players with Windows Media PlaysForSure certification.
While individual music downloads are 99¢ each and full albums begin at $9.99 each. The site features 30-second song samples and product pages that include biographies, similar artists, artist influences, and artist followers.
Tower plans to use "bundling" as a cross-promotional strategy that allows digital music exclusives and bonus material to be added to select CD purchases.
Tower has been quick to adopt new strategies. The company says it has strived to offer music in every format imaginable for over 45 years. In recent years, Tower has added TouchView interactive digital music kiosks to its retail stores, has partnered with MySpace.com for "Secret Shows," and launched the first podcasting network by a traditional retailer.
