Digg V3 Weathers Early Storm

A healthy response to the latest update to the Digg community contributed news site proved a challenge to the relaunched site's administrators.

Digg founder Kevin Rose joked on his blog that the team had to make a run to BestBuy to pick up additional servers. He was only half-joking, as early demand to view the new Digg did call for more hardware to be brought online.

"Bear with us as we turn on additional machines and tweak the site throughout the day," Rose joked.

Digg moved beyond its tech-only focus to embrace new categories for its users. Science, World & Business, Entertainment, Gaming, and Videos add to the Digg experience.

Currently, accessing the new areas of Digg prompts users to login or register to view them during the beta testing. Some Diggers complained that this meant Digg would now require users to login to view unpromoted stories, which prompted a response from Rose:

Just to clarify, digg and all of our containers/topics will be publicly viewable and will not require user registration. However, over the next week we will require user registration to access the new beta areas of the site. Once the bugs are squashed the beta status of the site will be lifted and everyone will be free to browse.

Digg's Technology section is open to everyone currently, registered or not. Some of the new sections, like Playable Web Games under Gaming, only have a few entries now, but should expand as more Diggers visit the new site.
