What Not To Search For In China
It is widely known that Google's Chinese search service is censored by the requirements of the Chinese government, blocking out results for phrases like "democracy" and "Tiananmen." After an informal investigation of search results on Google.cn, a blogger has compiled a list of other blocked results, which reveals some curious terms.
Philipp Lenssen, author of the popular weblog, Google Blogoscoped compiles a list of search terms the Chinese government would rather its citizens learn nothing about. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page make the list as well.
Lenssen, who chose search terms at random, cites search results pages appearing with the following disclaimer (translated):
According to local laws and policies some search results are not showing.
The list, says Lenssen, is not to be construed as a list of "typical" searches, but an illustration of the scope of censorship in China. Here are a few of the more interesting terms that turned up altered on Google.cn:
· Mao Zedong
· What Google censors
· Bird flu
· BBC
· Hong Kong
· Anything
· Ice cream
· Nazis
· A, M, and 1
· Fascism
· Water polution
