RIM Jams Yahoo Into BlackBerry
Yahoo achieved a place in the pockets of millions of BlackBerry users in 60 countries through a new deal with Research In Motion.
The two companies expanded their existing strategic global alliance by introducing several Yahoo services on the BlackBerry platform. A joint statement issued by the firms noted how Yahoo! Go for Mobile, Search, Mail, and Messenger will be available to BlackBerry users.
"This is killer," Marco Boerries, senior vice-president of Yahoo Connected Life, said in a Reuters interview. "The cool thing about this is that in the same way we now seamlessly connect personal communications, your personal address book to the BlackBerry, we also connect personal information you are already using on Yahoo, like sports, news or weather."
Yahoo's Mobile for BlackBerry website lists steps on setting up Search, Mail, and Messenger access on the device. Not all wireless carriers support Mail and Messenger yet, but Yahoo said these services will be rolled out to other carriers.
RIM and Yahoo are still working on integrating Yahoo's Go service with the BlackBerry. Yahoo Go provides real-time access to a variety of Yahoo's online services, like community and content sites.
Yahoo Mail on the BlackBerry can sync mail items and status now. Future developments will permit Yahoo! users to wirelessly import, modify and synchronize their Yahoo! Address Book and Yahoo! Calendar entries on their BlackBerries.
Messenger gives users access to friends lists, multiple conversations, chats, and even emoticons for instant messaging sessions. Search functions as it normally does for users.
