India Helps Oracle Spin Database Profits
A strong third quarter from Oracle's Asia Pacific unit returned an 8 percent increase in total revenues from the same period for the last fiscal year.
One of the deals that helped Oracle Asia Pacific report $458 million in total revenue came from India. The Income-Tax Department in New Delhi disclosed it had selected Oracle products to consolidate regional tax databases into a national database, Sify.com reported.
Though terms were not disclosed, the project is part of India's National Datacenter Project. The Indian Ministry of Finance anticipates completion of the project by December 2006.
"The Income-Tax Department has chosen Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware as the platform to develop a single national database, to increase efficiencies and improve citizen services. In two phases, Oracle will consolidate the existing 36 regional databases into a single national database," V.S. Mathur, Director General (Systems) Department of I-T said at a conference in New Delhi.
"Once the project is operational, we will be able to improve the response time for the department while creating a simpler and easier tax interface for the citizens," J.G. Pendse, Member, Investigation, I-T Department, said in the Sify report.
The Database and Fusion Middleware products have been central to Oracle Asia Pacific's growth. Along with Oracle Applications, Oracle cited those products as contributing to "increased customer momentum."
Oracle said of its Asia Pacific business that it plans to expand its presence in India beyond the six cities in which it operates. They will add offices in nine non-metro cities in India.
The company also plans to create more offices in China. Oracle has operations in four cities in China, and anticipates opening up in 26 more cities.
It's easy to see why. Oracle Asia Pacific contributed 13 percent of Oracle's global third-quarter revenues. They have seen 52 percent growth in new license revenues year-over-year, and those totaled 18 percent of Oracle's global new licensing revenues.
