Evoca Could Take Podcasts Mainstream

Word around the campfire is, a new voice recording web service just may be user-friendly enough to turn any blogger into a podcaster. Savannah-based Evoca allows voice recording by phone, by Skype, or by microphone.

Evoca calls it "everyone's recordings" and allows users to create, organize (by tagging), share, and search their recordings. Already being called podcasting "for the masses" or "for the rest of us," Evoca is a bit more specific:

With Evoca, businesses can run more efficiently, journalists can capture stories more effectively, and oral historians can spread those important, personal memories that we never have the chance to hear. With Evoca, people will be able to make audio notes to self, keep personal diaries, and record family histories for generations to come.

What separates it from other products, says Pete Cashmore and Michael Arrington, is its ease of use, the ability to get the recording transcribed, and allowing users to charge for content..

"I'm fairly impressed," writes Cashmore, even though he thinks it has a difficult market to capture - too mainstream and simple for the geek crowd and too esoteric for everybody else.

"Evoca is clearly an ambitious project," said Arrington. "The main issue is whether or not they can get and stay ahead of Odeo and become the brand people think of when they want to record and share audio files online."

He also points out that it still lacks the killer app needed by many of these services - the ability to edit and enhance the recording.
