Google Shares Reader, Globalizes Desktop

A pair of Google's products recently received tweaks to make them more useful to their users, with the ability to share lists from Google Reader, and enterprise and new language options for Google Desktop.

Google Reader product manager Jason Shellen recently posted about a new feature in Reader. Users can share starred or labeled lists of RSS feeds from their accounts with other people's Readers.

Shellen also said that labeled items can be shared too. So if a particular group of items have been labeled "hipster" or "tech," to use Shellen's example, the lists containing items with those labels may be shared with others.

Reader users can manage the sharing settings within the product. To enable sharing, they must visit the new Share tab in Reader and check the "shared" check box next to the desired items. Once sharing has been enabled for a list, users can email that list to others.

Users can also place a clip of headlines they are sharing on their sites or blogs. A wizard guides the user through the quick process of titling the clip, selecting a color scheme and the number of items to display, and whether or not to show item sources.

The Google Desktop team blogged that the enterprise version of Google Desktop has launched. The release includes group policy templates and instructions on centrally administering features on both the enterprise and consumer versions of Desktop.

Also, the team has added support for 15 languages to Google Desktop 3, as noted by software engineer Roy Ju: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, and Norwegian.

Besides those developments, the Desktop group also disclosed more on what is available for users:

...Floating Sidebar panels enable you to drag your favorite panels wherever you like on your desktop. And although Google Talk is not yet available in these languages, you'll still be able to easily email News, Web Clips, and more to a friend right from the Sidebar. If you have multiple computers, you can visit the preferences page to enable Search Across Computers, an advanced feature designed for seamless searches of your documents and web history from any of your computers. But wait! There's more: the Quick Search Box, available to English-language users for just a short time, is also included. It's a conveniently located place to search the web as well as your local computer.
