Wordpress Leaves Beta
Aspiring bloggers can join the same blog service that hosts the legendary Scobleizer and sign up for a Wordpress blog without needing an invitation.
Why blog? Why the heck not? asked Wordpress on its site today. It's got a couple of serious personalities using, with Robert Scoble's blog running on the site; also, notable Google engineer Matt Cutts uses Wordpress software to manage his blog on a separate host.
After creating an account, users reach the Dashboard, and can navigate the various Wordpress features from there. Most people will want to go ahead and write a post with the WYSIWYG editor. Posts can be tagged by categories, and new categories can be added via the Categories menu item in the sidebar.
Under the Manage section, users can click on the Akismet Spam tab to see if comment spam has been caught in the queue. Users of Blogger may wonder why they don't have a similar service available from Google, having to rely on captcha technology for comments instead.
Wordpress doesn't offer the openness of Blogger when it comes to templates and themes. To access other services available from Wordpress, users will need the API key listed under the Profile tab.
The first of these new services that has been disclosed is related to Akismet. The API key allows a blogger hosting a Wordpress blog to download the plugin and use Akismet to filter comment spam from that blog. Users who keep their blogs on Wordpress.com don't need to do anything extra, as Akismet is already running in place for them.
