Cingular Wireless announced the addition of mobile email and mobile instant messaging for the first time in the US market, allowing access to accounts from AOL, MSN, and Yahoo!.

Downloadable applications for the new services are available at Cingular MEdia Mall free of charge for those with a compatible phone. The company says the new service eliminates the need for desktop access or purchasing high-end PDA-like devices.

Calling email and IM the "killer apps of the Internet," Jim Ryan, vice president of consumer data services for Cingular Wireless, says the service serves as a mass market solution.

"We are enabling over 10 million of our existing customers with the ability to get to their existing email and IM services through a set of easy-to-use clients--anytime, anywhere, from their existing phones," said Ryan.

Cingular's own email service, Mobile Email, is also available on the most popular Motorola devices.

The instant messaging offering provides a tabbed interface that allows users to switch between AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN Messenger.

Along side the new release, Cingular is running a special promotion for those who download the IM client. After downloading the application, customers are entered into a $10,000 giveaway. The promotion runs through the end of October.

Both services, aside from kilobyte usage charges and per message charge for IM, are free to use. Cingular offers comprehensive packages for these as well.
