Robotic Fish Swim In London
A carp-like creation, with embedded sensors and realistic movement, was three years in the making and may be the the smartest robotic fish developed to date.
They may have a future in underwater exploration, pipeline leak detection, or espionage, but for now, the BBC reports the robotic fish created by a team of Essex University scientists has been an aquarium curiosity.
"This one is more life-like - it mimics normal swimming and sharp turning," lead researcher Professor Huosheng Hu explained to the BBC website. "People get confused and think it's a real fish."
Unlike previous ichthyic iterations over the past ten years, this one swims on its own and can avoid objects. "We have embedded sensors on board - so, unlike the previous fishes that have remote controls, these are fully autonomous and artificial-intelligence based," the professor noted.
Future versions of the robotic fish will have a new feature, one which allows them to find "food." In their case, food will be a charging station to recharge their batteries. Presently, three of the robotic fish make their home in the London Aquarium, and swim for about five hours before needing a recharge.
