On-Demand Storage At MCI
MCI launched a new service last week aimed at enterprise customers in the form of storage on-demand. The new service, called Utility Storage Service, is designed for enterprise customers who need flexibility in their utility storage.
The new service will help customers by allowing them to view attached servers, track volumes, monitor utilization and add, move and delete storage capacity simply and easily.
"MCI is bringing next-generation Hosting Services to market that deliver greater value and utility for our enterprise customers," said Ed Franklin, MCI senior vice president of IT Services. "With MCI's on-demand storage offering, MCI is helping customers take advantage of a shared storage environment, strengthening their data protection while driving greater cost and resource efficiencies within their operations."
MCI's aiming for a broad market, designing this product for use with any size company and provides an online portal where customers utilized the tools and it will notify the customer when they reach the top of their storage space so they can get more room and have it monitored around the clock.
Data security and protection is provided through standard mapping, This brings another question into play though. While MCI isn't the first company to offer this service and won't be the last. As more and more companies move to offer this type of data storage, one must worry about the security issues involved because unfortunately, any data available online has the potential to be cracked open and this is no different. While one doesn't want to sound alarmist, security concerns must be emphasized because even the biggest companies get nailed in this game.
