Camera Phones Not Taking The Place Of Digital Cameras

IDC has reported results from a survey that suggest that contrary to what some may think, digital cameras are not losing popularity at the hands of camera phones.

IDC's Mobile Imaging Survey actually shows that camera phones tend to turn people on to digital photography and create more buyers of digital cameras.

Camera Phones Not Taking the Place of Digital Cameras
More than 30% of the camera phone owners surveyed said that they plan to purchase a digital camera because they got into digital photography from camera phones.

The survey was aimed toward owners of camera phones in the United States, and inquired about the amount of images one captures, deletes, prints, and archives with their phone.

Printing of images from camera phones has gone down significantly with the average person printing one image every three months. Last year, stats showed that the average person printed one a month.

"Home is still the dominant place to print, yet the anemic number of prints supports IDC's theory that end users have more reliable expectations regarding mobile imaging than vendors themselves," said Chris Chute, an analyst with Worldwide Digital Imaging Solutions and Services.

The survey also showed that the biggest imaging activity camera phone owners participate in is archiving the images and sharing them through email.
