Podcasting Thrives Despite IPod Protests
Although Apple chairman Steve Jobs and an environmental group have exchanged angry words in the media about iPod batteries, podcasting continues to boom.
Mr. Jobs and his bete noire may not be paying attention at the moment, since the San Francisco Chronicle is busily detailing a recent environmental spat, but the growth of podcasting has enhanced the value of Apple's iconic music player.
To podcast, one simply uploads audio files to a web site. Interested listeners use software to check for and download new content. The software synchronizes the content with the player, which can be an iPod or another branded device.
Readers of a certain age will recognize the name Adam Curry from his time on MTV. Mr. Curry was a key developer and proponent of podcasting, and continues to produce a regular podcast himself. And he's not alone.
Several hundred podcasts may be found online already, and the number is growing. Podcasting requires only a few tools to implement; indeed, it has been suggested that radio industry titans could gain from the podcasting model. Whether a ClearChannel or a Viacom will do so, well that's another story.
