IBM Releases 500 Patents For Open Source Community
With one of the largest embraces of the open source community ever, IBM has announced that it will be releasing 500 software patents to open source developers, establishing a platform for increased innovations.
The pledge allows access to patents to developers whose projects meet the standards set by the Open Source Initiative. Simply stated, any programmer/developer working on open source software is eligible to work on IBM's released software.
The main reason IBM gives for releasing these patents is innovation. Dr. John E. Kelly, IBM senior vice president, Technology and Intellectual Property, makes this apparent by saying,
"True innovation leadership is about more than just the numbers of patents granted. It's about innovating to benefit customers, partners and society. Continuing IBM's legacy of leadership in the strategic use of intellectual property, our pledge today is the beginning of a new era in how IBM will manage intellectual property to benefit our partners and clients. Unlike the preceding Industrial Economy, the Innovation Economy requires that intellectual property be deployed for more than just providing the owner with freedom of action and income generation."
Dr Kelly also feels that this isn't an isolated occurrence. He believes IBM will continue to make patents available, further fostering the company's innovation push.
