GMerge Shutdown By Google

Apparently, Google does not like when others make their search features more functional than they already are... or at least ones that don't violate their TOS agreement.

There have been all kinds of developments concerning Google features that go above and beyond their intended use and sometimes Google lets them exist and other times, Google shuts them down. Such is the case with gMerge.

gMerge is a recently launched site that interfaced with the Google Maps satellite function in order to produce desktop and poster size images by merging the tile presentation of a Google Maps satellite result. Evidently, this violated Google's TOS agreement, according to Threadwatch.com, which resulted in the gMerge service being shut down.

A note from the Google Maps development team is posted on gMerge's homepage and says:

The Google Maps team recently noticed your Google Maps tile "stitcher"/ wallpaper maker at http://gmerge.2ni.net/. Google is always happy to see developers interested in our products and we commend you on the service. That said, we would appreciate it if you voluntarily remove your service and stop using Google Maps on your web site. The service violates the Maps Terms of Service available at http://www.google.com/help/terms_local.html, and jeopardizes our ability to make Google Maps available to the public because it encourages non-personal use of Google Maps.

As a person who enjoys the Google Maps service and some of the neat findings associated with it, it's unfortunate to see Google shut gMerge's useful service down.

So long gMerge. We hardly knew ye.
