Tyson Challenger Uses Hypnosis In Training Program
Bent on proving himself as a contender, Irish behemoth Kevin McBride has enlisted the power of the subconscious as he promises a super-sizing, mesmerizing, hypnotizing knuckle sandwich buffet for Mike Tyson. The eloquent Iron Mike promises to gut McBride like a fish.
Thirty-nine-year-old Tyson, at 5'11 and 233 pounds, didn't appear at all intimidated by the 6'6, 271 pound Irishman.
According to Mike, he's fighting "a tomato can" on Saturday night at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.
Somebody should tell Mike that tomatoes are Italian, potatoes are Irish.
In addition to an age and size advantage, 31-year-old McBride claims to have an ace up his sleeve. He includes a hypnotist in his training camp.
"A lot of athletes use only 2% to 8% of their ability at any given time," said McBride, with a 32-4-1 record with 27 KOs. "What hypnosis does is send out signals to the subconscious mind that makes you leave nothing behind. I'm going to take it to Mike Tyson with a 100% effort. He's going to have to knock me out to win."
Tyson, 50-5 with 44 KOs, doesn't seem to think that will be a problem.
"I'm going to gut you like a fish," said Tyson, which is a stark contrast to how McBride said Tyson would feel about it.
"…there's no way I'm going to be intimidated. I'm confident that when Tyson sees me in the ring, he's going to be intimidated by me."
McBride is a native of Clones, Ireland who gained notoriety in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as the youngest super heavyweight to compete in the Olympics. His nickname since has been "The Clones Colossus."
His first defeat came in 1997 against Axel Schultz, after which McBride moved to Boston to train under Goody Petronelli, who has trained Marvin Hagler and former super middleweight champion Steve Collins.
After two previous attempts at landing a fight with Tyson were unsuccessful, McBride lowered his price to $150,000. To McBride, this is a fight to prove a point, a stepping-stone to try and become the first Irish born heavyweight champion of the world.
